After spending the last year working with a nonprofit in Grand Rapids, MI that serves the local refugee population and strives to create a community of welcome, I have decided to accept a position with MCC as a Refugee Project Assistant in Pietermaritzburg, South Arica. I am so excited to continue working with a population I have grown to love immensely, this time in a new country! As a Refugee Project Assistant with MCC’s local partner, Key Ministries International, I will assist in advocating for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, and assist with administrative needs and organizational development. In South Africa, refugees are often denied legal rights, access to health care, and access to education. Many are fleeing homes made unstable by conflict and poor governance, and are in search of a safe place to build new lives for themselves and their families. However, upon arrival in South Africa, many are met with xenophobia and laws meant to restrict their basic human rights. I cannot wait to work alongside and learn from Key Ministries International and the people they serve.
Not only am I excited to continue working alongside refugees and asylum seekers, but I can’t wait to spend more time exploring a new part of the African continent. I will be living with a host family, and immersing myself in a new culture.
Your support is so appreciated. I am so grateful for your prayers over this year, and would be so thankful for your donations as well. Your contributions are what make this work possible! I look forward to keeping you all updated as I start this next adventure!
